Lt Bormann Joined the "Fliegertruppe" early in 1915, and following his training flew reconnaissance missions on the Russian Front. Later in the same year, he distinguished himself on the Galatian Front by discovering a Russian troop build-up, which was not anticipated by the Germans, with this information a Russian attack was routed.
He often flew lone fighter patrols between his "recon" duties and again distinguished himself by destroying two observation balloons. Later he transferred as a fighter pilot on the Turkish Front, he became a balloon specialist and accounted for the greatest destruction of enemy observation balloons, 11 total. For destroying two balloons in one day he was awarded Turkey’s highest military honor for a line officer, the Order of Mejidii (seen around his neck). The Turkish Air Service fez is one of the rarest items in the collection.
The photo in the museum shows Ltn. Bormann with his brother, a cadet in military school. Behind the two of them is Boramnn’s Albatross fighter aircraft.
