Lt. White was assigned to the 147th Aero Squadron and was a Flight Commander for the Squadron. He gained 9 victories during his service.
He received notification on October 10th that he could return home but decided to fly one more patrol. He flew his last patrol in mid-afternoon on the 10th, a balloon strafe. In an engagement with German Fighters his guns appeared to have jammed when he noticed a Fokker on the tail of a new pilot. Without hesitation, White dived at the German and deliberately rammed it, thus saving the new pilot at the cost of his own.
White was recommended for the Medal of Honor. However, he received an Oak Leaf Cluster to his DFC.
A color picture of White’s Children can be seen displayed next to his uniform, taken the day one of his children presented Jim Parks with their Father’s uniform. A black and white photo can also be seen with White, his wife, and children as they appeared in 1917.
