Major Butler, born in Ohio, has the interesting distinction of being an Army Aviator in both World War I and in World War II.
In 1918, Lt. Butler was a pilot with the 100th Day Light Bombardment Squadron, American Expeditionary Forces. He had a 6 month tour of duty in France. He then transferred to the 800th Aero Squadron A.E.F.. He received a World War I Inter Allied Victory Medal and one battle star for his service in France with the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.)
Butler was recalled into service with the out break of World War II and served in the North Africa and European theaters. He has 8 battle stars on his European theater ribbon, the most I have seen. Butler flew P-51’s and P-39’s with the 162nd Tactical Recon during Normandy.
His uniform is distinctive with a WWI first army patch on the right shoulder, three parade ribbons; Bronze Star, WWI Victory Medal with a campaign star, and North Africa and Europe campaign ribbon with eight battle stars. His uniform also has two six month overseas chevrons from his WWI service and five six month overseas service bars for his WWII service.
