Lt. Berry was trained as a photographer and bombardier at Lowry AFB, Denver, Colorado, in 1941-42 as an enlisted man. After his training, he was commissioned a 1st Lt. and was a member of the famous Polesti Raiders and flew with the 345 Bomb Squad (Heavy), 98th Bomb Group.

He flew as the Bombardier on the B-24, "War Cloud" that disappeared and never returned to base, June 13, 1943.
