Jim Newell trained at the University of California, Berkley and went to France for advanced pilot training. Impatient awaiting assignment to the 27th Aero Squadron, A.E.F. (American Expedition Forces), he volunteered to fly for the French in Observation Squadron BR 131.

He attained two confirmed victories and was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm.
