Ives Calhoun enlisted in the Air Service Signal Corps at Austin, Texas on August 22nd , 1917. After completing his Ground School at Princeton on October 26th , 1917, he entrained to Garden City, New York, leaving for overseas on November 23rd, 1917.
Upon Arrival at Liverpool, he again entrained for Winchester, England arriving at Le Harve on December 12th , 1917. He was then sent to St. Mazient for his flight training, arriving there on December 15. At St. Maient he found that the American Air Service had not yet established a training center. In fact, very few buildings had yet been set up. Sometime in March of 1918, he was able to begin flight training. On April 17th , he was transferred to Château roux for advanced flight training. From June 5th to July 27th he trained at Issoudun. From July 27th to August 25th he trained at Tours. He was then transferred to bomber training and was sent to St. Hean de Monts until September 1918, from there, back to Issoudun till October 5th.
After all of his training, he was finally assigned to the 1st Aero Squadron, on October 9th, 1918 where he participated in the Meuse-Argonne offensive for four weeks until the end of the war on November 11th , 1918.
