Lt. Gaylord was a “charter member” of the 96th Aero Squadron and served with the unit during its entire period of duty at the Front. The 96th was apart of the 1st Daylight Bombing Group. He was credited with the destruction of one enemy aircraft. He and his sometimes observer, Lt. Donald Warner both received the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism during the St. Mihiel Offensive in September of 1918. In W.W. II, Gaylord attained the rank of Brigadier General.
General Gaylord’s son lives here in Denver, and is a friend of the family. Through his help and support we are able to display his Father’s memorabilia.
Displayed along with Gaylord’s uniform is:
• Picture of Lt. Gaylord receiving his D.S.C. along with Eddie Rickenbacker.
• Framed 96th Aero Squadron “Devil” insignia, cut from the fabric of a Breguet with photos of Lt. Gaylord and his favorite observer, Lt. Farnsworth.
• Also included is a café bill with a cartoon drawn upon it showing Lt. Gaylord trying to sneak out of the café without paying the bill.
