CAPTAIN ELLIOTT WHITE SPRINGS

148TH AERO SQUADRON, A.E.F

Need picture!

Captain Springs was the 5th ranking U.S. ace in World War I, with 12 official victories.  After the war, he wrote books and novels about W.W.I aviation, the most famous being “The Diary of an Unknown Aviator”.  He was the very successful president of the Springs Cotton Mills after the death of his father.

Captain Springs uniform is a beautifully tailored British made whipcord uniform consisting of British styled overseas cap with captain’s bars and rare U.S. Seal pin attached in British Style.  The tunic has Signal Corps insignia and “U.S.R.” (United States Reserve) collar brass.  Ribbed Captain’s bars are on the shoulder epaulets.  There is a British rondel on upper right shoulder.  Military aviators badge is bullion, but with a pin back.

The ribbons of the Distinguished Service Cross, the British Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Inter-Allied Victory medal are sewn above the left breast pocket.  His Sam Brown belt has a holster attached, which contains a British Webley pistol.  Leather riding boots and a French made cane with a bullet tip and a French 5 Franc piece in the handle complete the display.
