Lt. Carruthers received his Reserve Military Aviator rating in November of 1917. He became an instructor at the 3rd AIC; and later was transferred to Orly Field, France ferrying planes to depots until August 1918. He was assigned to the 93rd Aero Squadron as a chasse pilot on 15 August 1918 in the Lorraine defensive sector. Lt Carruthers participated in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensive. He was officially credited with the destruction of two enemy aircraft.
Louis Carruthers and his wife visited the Parks’ many times throughout the years after the war.
