Llewellyn Owen was in the Royal Navy and was assigned to the HMS Victorious aircraft carrier. The HMS Victorious was the first aircraft carrier to engage the Bismarck and cripple the ship setting it up for its ultimate demise two days after Owens and his shipmates attach (May 1941).
The captain, as well as the fleet admiral that ordered the tattach, as well as the volunteers assumed that this would be a one way suicide mission.
