Cavanah was an enlisted flying sergeant with teh U.S. Navy when recruited for duty in the American Volunteer Group in China. He was a squadron leader with the American Volunteer Group until it was disbanded. Sgt. Cavanah's picture, as well as his name, appear in Larry Pistole's book on the American Volunteer Group.
